How to overcome perfectionism

Perfectionism is a subject close to my heart. Having perfectionism is a devastating trait to have while running your own business.

Now of course, having high standards and striving for excellence seems to be a good thing at first glance. But having severe perfectionism is a pit fall for every thing you do in life. It is extremely limiting because nothing is ever good enough and nothing ever gets done. Perfectionism can create an infinite loop of anxiety and depression. If you never put anything out there, you’ll never get anywhere.

While suffering from perfectionism might just be a trait that will never fully go away, I’ve gathered some insight on how to overcome and push through.

“Strive for progress, not perfection”

  1. Try to think more positively (and probably more realistically). Repeat these things to yourself frequently. ‘Nobody’s perfect’, ‘there’s no such thing as perfect’, ‘I can only do my best’, ‘If I put something out now, I always have the option to tweak it later’.
  2. Get some perspective from others around you. While you’re stressing out over the smallest details, chances are, others just won’t even notice. Go and asked around for feedback. See what they have to say. It might make you feel better.
  3. Look at the bigger picture, does it even really matter in the end? Does this thing you’re working on get you towards your goal? If so, put it out there and stop trying to perfect all the small details. Once you’ve obtained your Minimum Viable Product (MVP), put it out there in the world and work on ‘perfecting’ and tweaking it later on.
